Most of you all know that Madison was diagnosed with her bleeding disorder, vonWillebrands Disease, before she was even 2 years old. This disorder is a genetic disease that she will never outgrow or get rid of. When she was much younger, we had to have genetic testing done (she literally changed a letter on one of the many strands of DNA she has) to help figure out the best meds for her. After this testing we realized that for her severe type, she needs to "factor" prophylactically (to prevent bleeds) 3 times a week and extra if she gets hurt. What this means is that at least 3 times a week, she accesses her own veins and puts lifesaving medicine into her blood stream. We are so blessed and fortunate to not only have the best doctor (Dr. Dunn) at the best hospital (Nationwide Children's), but that we have access and coverage for these meds. Our hopes and goals are that all people affected by bleeding disorders have such access and coverage. Medicine (factor) for bleeding disorders can be and are life saving for many. Unfortunately, these meds are ridiculously costly....and they are fore LIFELONG infusions. Below is the blurb form the Bleeding Disorder Foundation. I hope all of my family and friends will either walk with us or consider donating. Any donations, at any amount, help out and are given for a very important cause.
With Love!
Amy
