I'm raising money for the Unite for Bleeding Disorders Walk!
It brings me joy to announce that team Iron Bleeders is back again for the Unite for Bleeding Disorders Walk 2026. We joined this community almost 30 years ago—I was at the time a very scared mother of a newly diagnosed, and very busy, toddler with Severe Hemophilia A. I remember in those early days being gripped by fear that my beautiful boy may not make it to adulthood. I’ll never forget attending my first annual conference for those affected by bleeding disorders. An older gentleman with hemophilia stood up in a crowded room to address all the mothers in the audience. With conviction he said, “You didn’t give your children Hemophilia, you gave them life!” I don’t think there was a dry eye in the room, including my own. I let his kind words wash over me, feeling grateful for my son’s life, while at the same time feeling the shared grief and loss within this community. This was in the mid 90’s, a time so many beloved individuals with Hemophilia were dying due to HIV/AIDS from contaminated blood products. Thanks to efforts to support research, the safety monitoring and production of new factor concentrates, as well as the rise of prophylactic treatment, my son and others of his generation were given more hope for an increased quality of life and a brighter future.
Many years have gone by and I’m proud (and relieved) because my very precious active little toddler is now a very busy man with a full life and a family of his own. And he has an equally wonderful younger brother, also affected—and like his brother, living life to the fullest. I do not take it for granted that everyday my boys are here on this earth is a gift. There are others in this community who have not been so fortunate—some have lost loved ones due to complications of having a bleeding disorder. Despite all the advancements in treatment, the reality is severe hemophilia (and other bleeding disorders) are potentially life-threatening conditions. My sons’ lives depend upon the clotting factor contained in a small vial they infuse several times a month—like many others with the condition. It behooves us to not lose sight of this. I’ve volunteered alongside those who have lost children, spouses and other loved ones. And they are often the ones who work tirelessly to support the other members. It’s a privilege to work with them and I have so much respect and admiration for their strength and giving hearts. This walk is also in support of them and those in the community we have lost.
I’ve learned from this amazing organization that there is a sense of connection and vitality that can arise from tremendous grief and loss—a remembering of how precious life is. Loss can feel unbearably painful, but it also has the capacity to bring individuals and groups together with an expanded sense of unity, compassion, and shared purpose. There is wisdom in this community because of what it has collectively endured—we know how to shine a light into the darkness. This non-profit is exceptional due to the integrity, courage, and strength of so many individuals that are dedicated to making the world a better place for those living with bleeding disorders.
All of the funds raised from the walk go directly to programs offered throughout the year including Camp Hemotion, Family Camp, and The Female Factor Retreat to provide education, advocacy, and support for individuals and families with bleeding disorders. The Foundation also provides invaluable support and advocacy to those living in underserved regions and communities. Additionally, funds raised help to build awareness in the community about bleeding disorders including bringing much needed attention and treatments to girls and women with bleeding disorders. I look forward to doing my small part to pay it forward. I invite you to help me as we walk, stroll, (or run!) to support NorCalBDF, which includes the Fresno area, for the Unite for Bleeding Disorders Walk 2026.
