As most of our donors know, we have participated in this Walk 13 of the 14 Walks, all but one from when they started. We do this because we know first-hand how the National and Indiana chapter help the person and the families in the bleeding disorder community. They do this through research, education, advocacy, and events such as a week camp for kids with bleeding disorders, and an annual meeting where doctors and others teach families how to care and cope with the various issues they face as well as what new treatments and drugs are in the pipeline.
The other reason we participate and fundraise is to publicly show our support for Dave Currey. He was diagnosed with hemophilia when he was 3 months old. Back then there were no products to treat his many internal joint bleeds. He suffered, he missed school for weeks on end, and all those bleeds caused major joint damage that he deals with today. Additionally, Dave had cousins who died because of a bleed that couldn't be controlled or because of the results of infected blood products. We walk in those cousins' honor as well.
Thankfully, children with hemophilia today don't face these hardships. There are products to prevent and treat bleeds. In the last few years new products have been developed that prevent most bleeds. Dave began taking one of these products a few years ago. It has been a game-changer for us. Previously it took a lot of planning and no unexpected bleeds in order for Dave to play golf or for us to even travel for a day. With these new products, he has enough clotting power where we can do things spontaneously. And even better, there isn't new damage to his joints. More research is on the horizon where there could even be a cure for hemophilia.
I’m all in to help end bleeding disorders. Our team goal is to raise as much as possible for this worthy cause. Will you help us? It’s easy — just click “donate” to make a secure donation.
Every dollar stays within our community and supports critical initiatives such as funding research to find better treatments, educating medical providers on the latest innovations and care, ensuring families have access to quality healthcare and providing access to the best educational resources available.
Will you help us reach our fundraising goal? If so, please make a donation to Dave's fundraising page.
Thank you in advance for your support.
Sincerely,
Deb (& Dave)
