Diagnosed at age eight with von Willebrand Disease, I learned early on how to cope with my condition. Growing up, I had my fair share of random nose bleeds, joint pains, and goose eggs. Doctors urged me to keep away from sports, but this did not prevent me from being active. I wasn’t going to let my bleeding disorder hold me back, and I’ve made it my mission to help others be active too.
I started a website, www.livesmartplaysmart.com, where young people with serious health conditions can interact honestly, share coping practices, and support each other on our journeys to be active. LiveSmart PlaySmart (LSPS) is not just about sports; my message to all teens is to stay active.
Physical activity is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle while living with a bleeding disorder. Overall, the physical and mental benefits of exercise can help you live a happy and healthy life with a bleeding disorder. I challenge you: don’t let your bleeding disorder hold you back. Let's all walk together!
The National Hemophilia Foundation is dedicated to finding better treatments and cures for inheritable bleeding disorders and to preventing the complications of these disorders through education, advocacy and research.
